The strikingly beautiful Fredericksburg region still bears the scars of the many major Civil War battles fought in the area. One such battle was fought at the site of the Spotsylvania Court House, lasting two weeks and resulting in 30,000 casualties. The area today is preserved under the auspices of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Military Park, which also includes miles of preserved ground that marks the huge Chancellorsville battlefield. Spotsylvania is located among the rolling hills and serene rural countryside typical of the state. The county's schools are excellent, offering a wide range of accelerated, alternative and adult education programs as well as traditional academics and special services. The district prides itself on striving to meet the needs of its diverse student body. In addition to good schools, the city and surrounding area offer affordable homes, friendly people, and excellent shopping. Antiques and unique one-of-a-kind items can be found throughout the region. Lake Anna, the Rappahannock River, and other nearby lakes, rivers, and streams provide abundant recreational opportunities, as do the many city and county parks. The Chesapeake Bay, Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean are all located nearby, offering even more opportunities to get outside and enjoy the state's mild climate and four distinct seasons. Nestled midway between Washington, DC, to the north and the state capital of Richmond to the south, Spotsylvania is an ideal place to call home. REAL ESTATE The Spotsylvania real estate market consists primarily of single-family detached homes, although town homes and condominiums have become more commonly available in recent years. In 2004, Spotsylvania was identified as the 19th fastest-growing county in the United States and numerous national, regional, and custom builders are actively developing the county, offering homes that range from small homes on country lots starting from the low $100,000s, to affordable subdivisions with single-family homes starting in the mid $400,000s, to exquisite custom homes on large estate-like lots. In the resale market, homes range in price from $130,000 for smaller town homes to several million dollars for large estate properties featuring substantial acreage. Single-family homes in areas such as Lake Wilderness and Shady Tree are generally priced from the low $300,000s to the high $400,000s. Several estate-like subdivisions—boasting lots of at least 5 acres—range in price from the $500,000s to the $800,000s while custom-home luxury home subdivisions such as Summer's Landing and Sawhill offer homes priced from the high $500,000s to over $1 million, with large lakefront and wooded lots. Fawn Lake offers the privacy of a gated community, luxurious custom-built homes, and features a golf course and water views and/or frontage, with homes priced from the high $700,000s to several million. Lots and land are available for custom building and investment. Richly historic and fiercely proud of it, Virginia is unlike any other state in the U.S. No other place in the country can claim eight presidential homes, two Colonial capitals, or as many Civil War battlefields and vast plantations. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County National Military Park encompasses the sites of four of the bloodiest Civil War battles. More than 85,000 men were wounded and more than 15,000 died on the 8,400 acres that make up the park. Markers, exhibits, trails, and buildings now identify the Confederate and Union lines, silently telling the stories of the Civil War. Chatham, an 18th century mansion, served as Union headquarters and a field house during the war. The “Stonewall” Jackson Shrine is the house where Jackson died after being mistakenly shot by his own men. Also within the park are open areas, wetlands, parkland and forest. The park is located on the fall line between the Piedmont region and the Coastal Plain region and contains a variety of vegetation and wildlife.
Though steeped in history, Spotsylvania remains a modern county. The Spotsylvania Mall contains more than 120 stores and outlet stores are nearby to fulfill residents’ bargain-shopping needs. Commuter buses and trains in nearby Fredericksburg are available for the trip to Washington, DC. In addition, many professional sports teams are located in the Washington, DC, area, including the Wizards, the Capitals, DC United, and the Redskins. Richmond is home to a Triple-A baseball team called the Braves, the Richmond Renegades Hockey team, the Richmond Kickers A-league soccer team, and the Richmond Speed Arena Football team. Colleges and universities in the area include Mary Washington College, Strayer University, Rappahannock Community College and Virginia Commonwealth University.
